Researchers at the Technology innovation Institute (TII), a leading global research center and part of the Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), have identified and helped resolve a critical issue in a widely used U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) tool for validation encryption technologies.

The resolution strengthens the reliability of encryption systems used across the globe. Dr. Victor Mateu, Acting Chief Researcher, Cryptography Research Center: “This is a great example of scientific diligence and international cooperation. It also highlights the growing contributions of researchers from the UAE to global cybersecurity.”

The issue emerged as TII’s cryptography team was developing a new digital signature feature to support secure communications. While testing their code against official validation data published by NIST, they noticed inconsistencies between their results and what the tool expected.

The team reported the issue to NIST in December 2024 with NIST responding promptly. Following several months of communication and collaborative investigation, NIST acknowledged the problem and released an updated version of the tool in April 2025.

This discovery underscores the importance of rigorous testing in cryptographic development. Encryption touches nearly every aspect of digital life, from messaging apps, to banking systems, and even minor flaws in the tools used to validate cryptographic algorithms can have outsized consequences.

TII considers it is critical to consistently ensure the quality of its own research as well as to contribute to the global cryptographic community by enhancing the accuracy of a resource that developers worldwide rely on.
