Stripe is reportedly moving beyond payments and deeper into the infrastructure powering how businesses use AI.

Stripe has reportedly finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, although neither company has publicly confirmed the transaction. The report comes weeks after The Wall Street Journal reported in July that the two companies were in talks, with OpenRouter potentially valued at around $10 billion. Asked about the latest report, a Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on “rumors or speculation.”

The reported price would be more than five times OpenRouter's most recent valuation. In May, the startup raised $113 million in a Series B at a reported valuation of about $1.3 billion, bringing its total funding to more than $150 million.

Founded in 2023, OpenRouter gives developers a single way to access AI models from different companies. Instead of building a separate connection for each provider, developers can use the same interface to choose a model or route requests based on factors such as price, performance and availability. The platform also provides automatic routing and failover between providers, helping applications continue running when a provider has an outage or performance problems. OpenRouter currently states that it offers more than 400 models from over 70 providers, has more than 10 million global users and processes more than 200 trillion tokens each month.

That helps explain why the reported deal is about more than its price. Companies do not necessarily want to use the same AI model for every task. One may be better suited to a demanding workload, while another may be cheaper or faster for a high-volume job. Having a layer that can route between providers gives developers more flexibility without requiring them to build a separate integration for every model.

Why OpenRouter Could Fit Stripe’s AI Strategy

The two companies already had a working relationship before the acquisition talks became public. In January, Stripe said OpenRouter was using Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax, and Radar for Fraud Teams to bill customers, handle tax collection, and manage fraud. At the time, the platform gave more than 5 million developers access to hundreds of AI models through one interface.

That relationship expanded in April, when OpenRouter became a partner for Stripe Projects. The service lets developers create an OpenRouter account, generate an API key and connect Stripe billing from the command line, allowing them to set up OpenRouter alongside other services used by an application.

The relationship also fits with Stripe's recent expansion into AI-related products. The company has been building tools around usage based and token-based pricing while developing products for AI agents. Its existing work with OpenRouter gives it a connection to the point where businesses use different AI models and paying for that usage.

An acquisition could bring those pieces closer together as Stripe already helps businesses collect payments and charge customers for digital services, while OpenRouter operates closer to the AI workload, where developers decide which models to use and how requests are routed. Owning the platform could give Stripe a larger role in how AI usage is handled and billed, without having to build a foundation model itself.

Stripe has not said what it plans to do with OpenRouter. If the reported transaction goes ahead, it would give the payments company a much closer position in the systems businesses use to work with different AI models.
